Securing a company's assets is a vital component of a company's day to day operations. A threat can attack from both internal and external sources. There are physical security concerns such as specific entry points (i.e. doorways, computer rooms, etc.) as well as virtual security requirements.

Physical Access and Control

Specific doorways and entrances within any organization need an access and control system to maintain convenience and speed while offering rigid access security. There are systems which use magnetic swipe cards, proximity sensors, and/or other portable devices to allow the individual holding the device access through the doorway. The key phrase is "the individual holding the device" and raises the question, "Is this individual who they say?" Fingerprint biometric devices restrict access by person, not device.

Virtual Security

Computer and network security should be considered just as important as physical security. Passwords, PINs, security codes, user names are usually the first line of defense against cyber attacks. Are these safeguards enough? Consider the following:

• "I have 20 passwords, of which, 3 of them change on a monthly basis. How do I remember them? Well, I simply put them on this sticky note under my computer." This is a security manager's nightmare.
• "No, when I walk away, I don't log out. It's too time consuming." This comment is prevalent because it's not convenient to have to log back in to a system each time one leaves their desk. Again, this makes it easy to sabotage.
• "We use these portable password tokens - but I forgot mine today. I have to call the help desk." Between employee time loss and help desk costs, the company has just spent $150.
